cover art for Bransby - The Shadow, shows light streaming through a colourful stained-glass window in church

One of the wonderful things about writing and producing music is that I'm completely free to write whatever I want about whatever I want. One of the wonderful things about listening to music is that you can interpret it any way you want. Although I write these pages about these songs, I often don't like explaining them, because what they mean to me is not necessarily the same as what they'll mean to you. This is a long-winded way of saying "I'm not explaining this one" - it means whatever you want it to mean. It's deeply personal to me and has a great depth of meaning, but it won't mean the same to you, so interpret it however you want, go for it, knock your socks off.

  1. The Shadow Bransby 3:44

The Shadow

This ship is sinking, this boat’s going down

Rumours of the drinking are spreading round the town

Be careful what you’re thinking, be careful or you’ll drown

Mother Theresa, sainted lady

Take a bow and hush your baby

Suffer the children to come to me

Martyr to your bounden duty

A stained-glass window where your light can shine

A shadow in the pulpit a shadow that was mine

Sundays for religious visions, weekdays only bad decisions

An embarrassment of riches mended with stitches

Mended and made do and made up to please you

Father Assisi, make it easy

I don't want those kids to tease me

Save the excuses for later on

Just a bad mood that went wrong

An unstarched robe, a poisoned chalice

A shadow in the doorway, a shadow that was his

And all these jobs have a cost attached

There is guilt in the shed and I don’t want it back

Mother Theresa, sainted lady

Take a bow and hush your baby

Suffer the children to come to me

Martyr to your bounden duty

A stained-glass window where your light can shine

A shadow in the pulpit a shadow that was mine
