When You’re Around

cover art for Bransby "When You're Around" - a black and white image of Bransby playing acoustic guitar in a wood for some reason

Another one recorded as part of a piece of work for my Music Technology degree. I think I was starting to get to grips with it all by this point, although I still insisted on recording acoustic guitar from the pick-ups rather than mic'ing the guitar for some reason.

This is, of course, yet another love song about my partner Dawn. We've been together well over 20 years at the time of writing but this song was written back when we were still in the early years of our relationship and not living together. Dawn insisted on moving about the country and then the world in an attempt to avoid me (an attempt that ultimately failed, ha!), and we spent a long time doing the long-distance relationship thing. I suppose this song is proof that long-distance relationships can work if you keep trying.

You can listen to When You're Around and read the lyrics below.

  1. When You're Around Bransby 3:23

When You're Around

Bloodshot eyes, I haven't slept for days
I haven't shaved for weeks, relax it's just a phase
Blue, blue eyes, lines form on my face
White lines rushing past, I just can't take the pace
Loving eyes shining into mine
Hands that brush my cheek, now I'm feeling fine

The touch, the smell, the taste and sound
It's all improved when you're around
The little things that get to me
Are lifted off and now I'm free
Sensations of the things we are
The warmest coat, the brightest star
I'm lost and found, I'm safe and sound
And things are good when you're around

I read my books and I watch my TV
And I concentrate hard on simply trusting the memory
Lights out at one and lights back on at two
I'm lying awake but not lying with you

And the sins of the father are the sins of the son
There's no escaping the things that I've done
Trying to argue but you've already won
And when I think it's all over it's only begun

The touch, the smell, the taste and sound
It's all improved when you're around
The little things that get to me
Are lifted off and now I'm free
In pieces as the day begins
The prize-fighter who never wins
I long to hear that certain voice
I have to smile, I have no choice
Sensations of the things we are
The warmest coat, the brightest star
I'm lost and found, I'm safe and sound
And things are good when you're around
